Texas Hold Em Glossary

The world series of poker plays texas holdem. Here is some of the terms you might hear.

Blind: This mandatory bet that is placed before the cards are dealt and its purpose is to force money into the pot. In most games you have to post a blind before you enter a game.

Big Blind: This is the largest blind posting of a bid prior to the cards being dealt. The player that is sitting two seats to the left of the dealer makes this post.

Community Cards: These are the cards that are placed in the middle of the table that the players can use to create a 5 card hand.

Double Flop Hold Em: This is a hold em variant when two flops, two turns and two rivers are dealt out but they cannot be mixed to make that last hand.

Extra Blind: This is a blind that is put in by a player that is just coming into the game or returning to the game or even when they change the positions at the table.

Fifth Street: This is when the fifth board or community card which is often called a river in the hold em games.

Flop: The Flop is the first 3 community cards that are faced up on the table. In addition it is also used to describe what your hand was after the flop.

Fourth Street: The fourth board card and more commonly the turn in the game of hold em.

Live Blind: A blind bet that is forced in by one or more players before the cars were dealt out. The live part means those players still have the option of raising when the action comes around to them.

Nuts: is the word for the best possible hand

On the Button: this is the last player to act in a betting round which is the dealer’s position.

Pre Flop: This is the space of time after you have been dealt your pocket cards and before the flop is going to be dealt.

Re-Raise: putting in another bet on top of bet on top or a raise.

River: This is the fifth and last community card that is dealt in Texas Hold Em

Showdown: This is the final stages of the game in Texas Hold Em. It is where the players that are left show their cards to reveal their hands.

Texas Hold Em: This is a different version of Poker where each player is dealt tow cards face down and over the course of the game 5 communal cards are placed face up on the table.

You may be able to understand the game more if you understand the rules as well as the terminology. Poker of any kind is not an easy game to understand but it does make more sense to understand the bets and the rules. Try playing some games at home with friends until you get the hang of it and then try to play in a casino or on line. You will be able to have a better time playing when you understand all the rules.
